Scheduling on the calendar

Drag issues onto the calendar, move and resize them, and shape your week.

The calendar is where an issue stops being a line in a backlog and becomes a block of time on your day. You build your plan by dragging.

How the calendar is laid out

Areca's calendar is one continuous, scrolling timeline rather than a set of day or week views to switch between. It runs from about a week behind today to roughly a month ahead, so your recent past and your upcoming weeks are all on the same surface — just scroll.

The Today button in the corner (and the N key) snaps you back to now whenever you've wandered off. If you leave the calendar and come back, it returns to where you left it.

Scheduling an issue

Drag an issue from the list and drop it onto the calendar.

  • Drop it on a time slot to create a block. It lands as a one-hour block and snaps to the nearest 15 minutes.
  • Drop it on the all-day row at the top instead to schedule it for the whole day without a specific time.

That's the core loop: grab an issue, drop it where it belongs.

Moving and resizing

Once a block is on the calendar:

  • Move it by dragging — to a different time or a different day. It snaps to 15-minute steps.
  • Resize it by dragging its top or bottom edge. Blocks run from 15 minutes up to 10 hours.
  • Switch between timed and all-day by dragging a block onto (or off of) the all-day row, or from the block's right-click menu.

A block that runs past midnight simply continues onto the next day, drawn as one plan split across the days it covers.

When blocks overlap

Double-booked yourself? Overlapping blocks stack side by side so both stay visible. If one is hiding another, hover the group and press Shift + S to shuffle which sits on top.

Deadlines and cycles

The calendar shows Linear's dates alongside your plan, so you're never scheduling blind:

  • Due dates appear as chips in a row beneath the date headers. Click one to highlight the matching issue back in the list.
  • Cycle ends are marked on the day a cycle closes, for the team you're viewing.

Color-coding your calendar

Color your blocks by what matters to you right now. Press C to cycle through the modes, or jump straight to one:

  • 1 — no color
  • 2 — by priority
  • 3 — by status
  • 4 — by label

Your choice sticks between visits.

Adjusting the density

Prefer a compact overview or a roomy hour-by-hour view? The calendar's row height has three settings — Fit, Roomy, and Double — under Settings.

Undoing a change

Rescheduled or unscheduled something by mistake? The confirmation that pops up after the change includes an Undo button that puts it right back.

Your schedule stays in Areca

Scheduling is personal. The blocks you place on the calendar live in Areca and are never written back to Linear — your teammates won't see them, and they don't touch the issue in any way. Only edits to an issue's own fields (status, priority, labels, due date) sync back. See Syncing with Linear for the full picture.
