Terms of Service

These Terms of Service (“Terms”) govern your access to and use of Areca (“Service,” “we,” “us,” or “our”), a personal productivity application that integrates with Linear. By creating an account or using the Service, you agree to be bound by these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.

1. Description of Service

Areca is a personal productivity layer for Linear that allows you to:

  • View and manage your Linear issues in a calendar-based interface
  • Schedule Linear issues to specific times on your personal calendar
  • Update issue properties such as priority, status, due dates, and labels
  • Receive desktop and sound notifications for issue activity
  • Customize your workspace preferences

Areca accesses your Linear account data through the Linear API using OAuth 2.0 authorization. The Service is designed to complement your existing Linear workflow, not replace it.

2. Eligibility

You must be at least 16 years of age to use the Service. By using the Service, you represent and warrant that you meet this requirement and have the legal capacity to enter into these Terms. If you are using the Service on behalf of an organization, you represent that you have the authority to bind that organization to these Terms.

3. Account Registration and Security

3.1 Account Creation

To use the Service, you must authenticate via your Linear account using OAuth 2.0. We do not offer email/password registration. By connecting your Linear account, you authorize us to access your Linear data as described in Section 5.

3.2 Account Security

You are responsible for maintaining the security of your Linear account and any devices used to access the Service. You must notify us immediately of any unauthorized access to or use of your account.

3.3 Account Deletion

You may delete your account at any time through the Settings page. Upon deletion:

  • All your data stored within the Service will be permanently deleted, including issue schedules, preferences, and cached data.
  • Your Linear OAuth access token will be revoked.
  • This action is irreversible.

4. Acceptable Use

You agree not to:

  • Use the Service for any unlawful purpose or in violation of any applicable laws or regulations.
  • Attempt to gain unauthorized access to the Service, other accounts, or any related systems or networks.
  • Interfere with or disrupt the integrity or performance of the Service.
  • Reverse engineer, decompile, or disassemble any aspect of the Service.
  • Use automated means (bots, scrapers, etc.) to access the Service beyond its intended functionality.
  • Circumvent any rate limits, security measures, or access controls implemented by the Service.
  • Use the Service in a manner that could damage, disable, overburden, or impair any of our servers or infrastructure.
  • Sublicense, resell, or redistribute access to the Service without our prior written consent.

5. Linear Integration and Data Access

5.1 Authorization Scope

When you connect your Linear account, you grant the Service permission to:

  • Read your assigned issues, including titles, identifiers, due dates, priorities, states, team information, assignee details, labels, and sub-issue relationships.
  • Read available workflow states and labels for your teams.
  • Write updates to your issues, including changes to titles, priorities, due dates, states, and labels (when issue editing is enabled in your settings).

5.2 Scope of Access

The Service only accesses issues and data that are visible to you within Linear based on your existing Linear permissions. We do not escalate or modify your Linear access privileges.

5.3 Data Synchronization

The Service periodically synchronizes data from Linear to provide an up-to-date view of your issues. Cached Linear data is stored in our database and refreshed at regular intervals. You may also trigger manual syncs.

5.4 Linear's Terms

Your use of Linear is governed by Linear's own terms of service and privacy policy. We are not responsible for Linear's availability, functionality, or data practices. Any changes Linear makes to their API or service may affect the functionality of Areca.

6. Data Collection and Privacy

6.1 Data We Collect

We collect and store the following categories of data:

  • Account Information: Your name, email address, and Linear user ID as provided through Linear OAuth.
  • Authentication Data: OAuth access tokens and refresh tokens required to maintain your Linear connection.
  • User Preferences: Your notification settings, timezone, calendar display preferences, and issue editing preferences.
  • Issue Schedules: Scheduling data you create, including start and end times, title overrides, notes, completion status, and duration.
  • Cached Linear Data: A local cache of your Linear issue data to improve performance.
  • Feedback: Any feedback you voluntarily submit through the in-app feedback form.
  • Usage Analytics: Anonymized usage data collected through PostHog.

6.2 How We Use Your Data

Your data is used to:

  • Provide and maintain the Service's core functionality.
  • Synchronize and display your Linear issues.
  • Store your scheduling preferences and calendar data.
  • Send desktop and sound notifications based on your settings.
  • Improve the Service through aggregated, anonymized usage analytics.
  • Respond to feedback and support requests.

6.3 Data Storage and Security

Your data is stored in a PostgreSQL database hosted on secure infrastructure. Security measures include:

  • HTTPS encryption for all data in transit (enforced via HSTS in production).
  • Content Security Policy (CSP) headers to prevent cross-site scripting.
  • CSRF protection through origin validation.
  • Rate limiting to prevent abuse.
  • Input validation on all API endpoints.

6.4 Data Sharing

We do not sell, rent, or share your personal data with third parties, except:

  • Linear: Data is exchanged with Linear's API as necessary to provide the Service's functionality.
  • Analytics Providers: Anonymized usage data may be processed by PostHog for analytics purposes.
  • Legal Requirements: We may disclose data if required by law, regulation, legal process, or governmental request.

6.5 Data Retention

  • Your data is retained for as long as your account is active.
  • Upon account deletion, all associated data is permanently removed from our systems, including cached Linear data, schedules, preferences, and feedback.
  • OAuth tokens are revoked with Linear upon account deletion.

6.6 Your Rights

You have the right to:

  • Access the personal data we hold about you.
  • Delete your account and all associated data at any time.
  • Modify your preferences and settings through the Service.
  • Revoke Linear OAuth access at any time through your Linear account settings.

7. Intellectual Property

7.1 Service Ownership

The Service, including its design, code, features, and documentation, is owned by us and is protected by intellectual property laws. These Terms do not grant you any rights to our trademarks, logos, or branding.

7.2 Your Content

You retain ownership of any content you create within the Service, such as issue schedule notes and title overrides. By using the Service, you grant us a limited license to store and display this content solely to provide the Service to you.

7.3 Feedback

Any feedback, suggestions, or ideas you submit about the Service may be used by us without obligation or compensation to you.

8. Service Availability and Modifications

8.1 Availability

We strive to maintain high availability of the Service but do not guarantee uninterrupted or error-free operation. The Service may be temporarily unavailable due to maintenance, updates, or circumstances beyond our control, including Linear API outages.

8.2 Modifications

We reserve the right to modify, suspend, or discontinue the Service (or any part thereof) at any time, with or without notice. We will make reasonable efforts to notify you of significant changes that affect your use of the Service.

8.3 Updates to Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. If we make material changes, we will notify you through the Service or via email. Your continued use of the Service after such changes constitutes acceptance of the updated Terms.

9. Disclaimer of Warranties

THE SERVICE IS PROVIDED “AS IS” AND “AS AVAILABLE” WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, WHETHER EXPRESS, IMPLIED, OR STATUTORY. TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, WE DISCLAIM ALL WARRANTIES, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, NON-INFRINGEMENT, AND ANY WARRANTIES ARISING FROM COURSE OF DEALING OR USAGE OF TRADE.

WE DO NOT WARRANT THAT THE SERVICE WILL MEET YOUR SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS; THAT THE SERVICE WILL BE UNINTERRUPTED, TIMELY, SECURE, OR ERROR-FREE; THAT THE DATA SYNCHRONIZED FROM LINEAR WILL BE ACCURATE OR COMPLETE; OR THAT ANY DEFECTS IN THE SERVICE WILL BE CORRECTED.

10. Limitation of Liability

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW, IN NO EVENT SHALL WE BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, OR ANY LOSS OF PROFITS, DATA, USE, GOODWILL, OR OTHER INTANGIBLE LOSSES, RESULTING FROM YOUR ACCESS TO OR USE OF (OR INABILITY TO ACCESS OR USE) THE SERVICE; ANY CONDUCT OR CONTENT OF ANY THIRD PARTY; UNAUTHORIZED ACCESS, USE, OR ALTERATION OF YOUR DATA; ANY ISSUES ARISING FROM THE LINEAR API; OR ANY INTERRUPTION OR CESSATION OF THE SERVICE.

OUR TOTAL AGGREGATE LIABILITY FOR ALL CLAIMS RELATED TO THE SERVICE SHALL NOT EXCEED THE AMOUNT YOU PAID US, IF ANY, IN THE TWELVE (12) MONTHS PRECEDING THE CLAIM.

11. Indemnification

You agree to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless us and our officers, directors, employees, and agents from and against any claims, liabilities, damages, losses, and expenses (including reasonable attorneys' fees) arising out of or in any way connected with your access to or use of the Service, your violation of these Terms, or your violation of any third-party rights, including Linear's terms of service.

12. Termination

12.1 By You

You may terminate your use of the Service at any time by deleting your account through the Settings page.

12.2 By Us

We may suspend or terminate your access to the Service at any time, with or without cause, and with or without notice. Grounds for termination include violation of these Terms, abuse of the Service, or conduct that we determine to be harmful to other users or the Service.

12.3 Effect of Termination

Upon termination, your right to use the Service ceases immediately. Sections 7, 9, 10, 11, and 13 shall survive termination.

13. General Provisions

13.1 Governing Law

These Terms shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the jurisdiction in which we operate, without regard to conflict of law principles.

13.2 Dispute Resolution

Any disputes arising out of or relating to these Terms or the Service shall first be attempted to be resolved through good-faith negotiation. If negotiation fails, disputes shall be resolved through binding arbitration, unless you opt out within 30 days of accepting these Terms by notifying us in writing.

13.3 Severability

If any provision of these Terms is found to be unenforceable or invalid, that provision shall be limited or eliminated to the minimum extent necessary, and the remaining provisions shall remain in full force and effect.

13.4 Entire Agreement

These Terms, together with our Privacy Policy, constitute the entire agreement between you and us regarding the Service and supersede all prior agreements and understandings.

13.5 Waiver

Our failure to enforce any right or provision of these Terms shall not be considered a waiver of that right or provision.

13.6 Assignment

You may not assign or transfer these Terms or your rights under them without our prior written consent. We may assign these Terms without restriction.
